Event Title: Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) Updates

Event Date: Thurs, June 12th

Event Time: 3:00 - 4:00 PM

Location: Zoom (link provided in registration confirmation)

Description: This presentation will explore the differences between cannabinoid-based products from the regulated medical marijuana market and the hemp industry, with a focus on product quality, chemical purity, and the presence of unknown or unregulated by-products. Participants will examine how regulatory frameworks influence testing standards and consumer safety, and how these variables affect public health monitoring. Real-world examples will highlight gaps in oversight and opportunities for laboratory and epidemiological response.

Speaker: Nyomi Barrick-Wommack began her career as a research assistant in the Plant and Soil Science department at Oklahoma State University, where she earned her B.S. in Agricultural Science and Natural Resources. She went on to work in the Oklahoma cannabis industry as a cultivation intern and education specialist, gaining hands-on experience before joining the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Authority (OMMA) in March 2022. Nyomi currently serves as OMMA’s Science Education and Outreach Manager. She earned her M.S. in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics from the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 2023, conducting extensive research to deepen her expertise in cannabis science and public health. She represents OMMA on the ASTM International D37 Committee on Cannabis and contributes to the Cannabis Regulators Association (CANNRA) through its Medical Cannabis and Public Health and Data subcommittees. Her work in policy and public service has earned her recognition as a NextGen Under 30 award recipient.

Continuing Education: Up to 1 hour CPH & CHES, and OK LSW are available from this webinar. Attendees seeking continuing education or certificates of attendance must request their credits from OPHA through this linked survey within a week of the event.

Learning Areas: Implementation, research and evaluation, and advocacy and policy

Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate cannabinoid-based products by market origin, with attention to quality assurance, chemical purity, and the presence of uncharacterized by-products.
  • Analyze labeling, packaging, and laboratory data to assess product integrity and regulatory compliance in relation to public health safety.
  • Evaluate the implications of cannabinoid product variability on epidemiological trends, laboratory testing capacity, and public health surveillance strategies.

NEW – Cost of Continuing Education from OPHA

OPHA provides continuing education to Oklahoma CHWs at no cost - thank you for your work improving Oklahoma's communities! All other attendees will be invoiced $15 per credit hour upon event registration effective July 1, 2024.

Continuing Education Attendance & Evaluation Policy

OPHA offers professional development opportunities and pursues approvals from credentialing bodies to offer continuing education. OPHA strives to meet the standards and competencies of credentialing agencies, and therefore attendance at an OPHA CE event does not guarantee credit. CE-seeking attendees must complete OPHA's Attendance & Evaluation Survey, provided at the conclusion of the event, so that OPHA's Continuing Education Committee can ensure attendance, demonstrated learning, and provide requested CE event certificates to attendees on a quarterly basis. CE credits are ultimately awarded to participant by credentialing agency/body upon event and survey completion and the attendee reporting our provided activities.
